Major (Dr.) Jamie Agapoff dedicated her military career to serving as a mental health professional, advocating for Soldiers’ well-being while navigating their own journey as a non-binary trans woman. As a U.S. Army Reserve psychiatrist, she deployed twice to the Middle East, providing essential care to service members struggling with combat stress, personal challenges, and gender identity concerns.
While deployed to Camp Buehring, Major Agapoff quickly became a trusted resource for Soldiers seeking guidance. Recognizing the lack of formal support, she established an anonymous drop-in group where Soldiers could share their experiences, ask questions, and receive affirmation. This initiative not only created a safe space for LGBTQ+ service members but also fostered important discussions among medical professionals about military policies and standards of care. “I never would have guessed how much of an impact I would make just by sharing my pronouns,” Major Agapoff reflects. Her leadership extended beyond their clinical practice—educating commanders, supporting Soldiers, and helping military families understand and affirm their transgender children. After eight years of service, Major Agapoff resigned her commission following their second deployment to focus on her career at the Veterans Administration, where she continues to treat veterans. Her work remains a testament to the power of representation, advocacy, and compassionate leadership in the military and beyond.
