Senior Airman Aiden Meyer, Air National Guard

Senior Airman Aiden Meyer enlisted in the Illinois Air National Guard in June 2017, embarking on a six-year journey of service. Assigned to security forces after completing basic training and tech school, Aiden made the difficult decision to delay his transition, fearing the political climate and potential repercussions under the administration in power. Despite these challenges, his passion for service never wavered, even as he navigated uncharted territory as the first openly transgender Airman at his base.

Initially, Aiden faced significant obstacles within his unit. Isolation, exclusion from activities, and mockery of his chosen name and pronouns made his early years in security forces a constant struggle. "I didn’t expect to be celebrated for my transition, but I did expect basic respect and inclusion in my career," Aiden reflects. However, with the support of SPARTA, a support, education, and advocacy organization for transgender military members, and a key ally in SMSgt Lee, Aiden found a path to a better environment. In February 2021, he transferred to the 217th Engineering Installation Squadron as an Engineering Assistant, where he was treated with the respect every Airman deserves.

Aiden’s time with the 217th EIS marked a turning point in his career. "A unit where I was treated like any other Airman was a remarkable and refreshing experience," he says. With affirming leadership and supportive colleagues, Aiden participated fully in activities, traveled on TDYs, and helped host his wing’s first Pride event in June 2023. Sponsored by the Wing Diversity Council, the event was a testament to the progress made for LGBTQ+ service members. Aiden’s journey paved the way for others who later came out and served openly.

Reflecting on his experience, Aiden shares a powerful message: "The military must continue to embrace diversity. Just as it accepted racial integration, women in combat, and the repeal of DADT, it must now welcome the strength and uniqueness that transgender and non-binary individuals bring." From enduring adversity to fostering inclusion, Aiden’s story highlights how affirming leadership and a culture of respect can transform service members’ lives and strengthen the force. His journey serves as an inspiration and a call to action for the entire Department of Defense to uphold the values of inclusion.
